Lip Notch: In the light gauge steel (LGSF) industry, various punching processes are used to optimize the durability and assembly process of structures. One of the most common punches is the Lip Notch punch. This process is done to ensure that LGS profiles fit together smoothly during assembly, creating a flat surface. There are two types of Lip Notch punches in the LGS market, and both methods aim to make the assembly of light gauge steel structures more efficient, although they differ in their processes and outcomes.In the first type, LGSF machines bend the lips upward, trying to create a “U” shape during the process. This method involves bending the lips after the profile has been shaped by the rollformer. It is particularly effective with thinner steel profiles, facilitating the connection of the profiles. However, bent lips can cause problems with thicker steel profiles. In thicker steel (e.g., thicker than 1.2 mm), bent lips need to be flattened. If this flattening process is not done properly, issues may arise during the assembly of gypsum boards. The assembled gypsum panels may take on a “W” (wavy) form due to the bent lips, leading to both aesthetic and functional issues in wall panels. For this reason, the bending method is generally preferred for thinner steel profiles.
